Nursing Home Management Case Studies
Turning Around a Financially Troubled Nursing Home
Ecumen took over management of a county-owned nursing home and in just the first year the county saw an immediate financial upswing due to improved operations. The year before Ecumen took over management, the nursing home lost $1.5 million. Ecumen’s management reduced the loss by more than $1 million.
Ecumen’s work included an audit for opportunities to maximize revenues, implementing a new pharmacy contract, integrating new financial tracking software, and integrating the nursing home to Ecumen’s computerized internal tracking system, so they could benchmark key measures with other Ecumen nursing homes.
Helping a Nursing Home Owner Reverse Losses
Over a three-year period, Ecumen has helped a nursing home owned by several churches move into positive income territory and realize a net operating income gain of nearly $1 million. Ways that Ecumen helped stem the losses included integrating this nursing home into our group purchasing, providing onsite leadership, providing access to Ecumen’s resources such as human resources and IT departments, and moving to electronic charting.
Increasing a Nursing Home’s Revenues and Cash Flows
Over a five-year period, Ecumen substantially improved another county-owned nursing home’s financial performance, increasing revenues by nearly $4 million and substantially improving cash flow. Ecumen also provided management services to senior housing associated with this nursing home. Ecumen provided clinical consulting and leadership, improved hiring and decreased turnover, strategic planning, diversified services and implemented cost analysis and controls.
